John "Crow" Fletcher, age 85, of Corbin, departed this life on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at Baptist Health Corbin.
John was born in Manchester on March 18, 1932, to William and Myrtle White Fletcher. John graduated from Clay County High School in 1952, where he was an outstanding basketball player. He joined the Navy during the Korean War, serving four years. After serving in the Navy, he attended Cumberland College for two years on a basketball scholarship. He then transferred to Union College on another basketball scholarship where he earned a Master of Arts in Education. He then attended Eastern Kentucky University and earned a Rank 1 in Principalship, K through Twelve. John taught school and coached basketball for three years at Pendleton County High School in Falmouth.
John came to Corbin in 1964, and coached basketball and baseball. He also taught history at Corbin High School. He worked in the little league program for several years. He retired in 1997, with a total of 36 years of teaching, 33 years at Corbin High School. John received many awards during his career.
John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Corbin, where he worked in the food pantry for years.
John is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Davis Fletcher, his parents, four brothers, seven sisters, a nephew: Billy Jones, a stepdaughter: Tamla Sullivan Barton, and a great-granddaughter: Susan Wright.
He is survived by his wife Billie Orita Sullivan Fletcher, one daughter: Judy Rudder and husband E.R. of London, two grandchildren: Dawn Carpenter and Marc Rudder, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two stepsons: Spencer Sullivan of Louisville, and Bill Sullivan of Richmond. He is also survived by nieces: Janice Bowling and Lynda Roberts, nephews: Wayne and Quinton Jones all of Manchester, and Tommy Jones of Barbourville, and several great nieces and nephews.
John leaves behind a host of other family members, friends and church family to mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at the First Baptist Church of Corbin with the Rev. Austin Carty officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at the O'Neil - Lawson Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held at the First Baptist Church of Corbin on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, from noon until the funeral hour.
