James "Jim" Dante Hill, 80, of Corbin, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, in his home surrounded by his wife and five daughters, choosing his passing on his own terms and in his own way, as he had his whole life.
Jim, or "JD," as he was known by his school buddies, was born May 7, 1936. We know from his stories that he was a rambunctious teenager and football player who fibbed about his age to join the Air Force and begin a life of adventure, his most significant moment the wooing and marrying of Sandy Magargee in Washington, DC. They then set off on a 58-year married journey that took them to Florida, Germany, Montana, Alaska and various travels in between, all while finding time to become a crack bartender, learn guitar, collect and restore old clocks, become a heavy-construction mechanic, and have five daughters, who continued to be both joys and pests about his eating habits and smoking until the end. He also could cut a mean rug and whip up a superb Brandy Alexander and Grasshopper for special occasions. Jim had a distinguished career in US Air Force, honorably discharged after 20 years for Meritorious Service.
Still around and kicking family members are: Patty White and husband, Terry of Morehead; Teresa J. Hill, Esq., of Lexington, and grandson Nigel Miller; Sharri L. Hill Reinhard, DVM, and husband, Gregory, and grandchildren Alexander and Samantha of Peapack, NJ; Bunnie J. Hill, MD, and Paul Bologna of Baton Rouge, LA; and Jamie L. Hill and husband, Lawrence Robinson of New Orleans, LA; nephew, Ronald "Ronnie" Chadwell; long-time buddy and trusted friend Larry Terry and wife Betty; chosen son and brother, Chad Gregory, KSP Trooper and son Dalton; friends Charles "Chuck" Gilkerson and wife Rhona; and family friends Shelley and Dick Goldblum, and other loved friends and family.
He is preceded by his mother and father, Walter and Emma Hill of Corbin; older brothers Austin, Keith, and sisters Willemina and Juanita.
Visitation is Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at O'Neill-Lawson Funeral Home. Funeral will be at the Hill family cemetery on Sunday at 10 a.m.
