Born in 1936 in Corbin, Jo Ann was passionate about her family and her life of volunteerism. Jo Ann was a Girl Scouts leader for 18 years and loved every moment she spent in Scouts. She was an exceptional cook who loved to entertain family and friends around her table.
For many years she was an active member of First Christian Church in Corbin where she served on several committees, including the Missionary Guild and volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, nursery attendant, and spent many happy hours in the church kitchen.
As a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Corbin, she again volunteered in many roles including the St. Gerard clothing ministry, the Sacred Heart Alter Society and her beloved kitchen duties. She received spiritual comfort from Father Kevin Segerblom and staff and the Eucharistic ministers from St. Anne Catholic Church in Bristol, Virginia.
Jo Ann worked as a teacher's assistant at First Baptist Church Preschool in Corbin and also in the After School Program at First Baptist Church Family Life Center, as well as Community Greeting Service. A lifelong Democrat, she was a former Secretary of the Knox County Women's Democrat Club and enjoyed serving as an official poll worker for many elections.
She loved cats, Elvis, the color black, and Cheerios with bananas, in that order.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Edna Hopper and her daughter, Patricia Garland Smith.

Thomas; Mary Lee Pace Schiesz of Bristol, Tennessee; seven grandchildren: Jessica Bishop, Courteney Alexander, Matthew Alexander, Laura Alexander Hoover, Regan Silverton, Aidan Silverton and Beckham Schiesz; three cousins who were like brothers and sisters: Judy Hopper Cook, Jan Alan Hopper and Gary Hopper.
