Robert M. Hoffelder
Robert (Bob) Hoffelder, of Laguna Woods, CA and formerly of Williamsburg, KY passed away from acute bleeding of an aortic aneurysm on Sunday, December 8. He would have been 87 on December 15. He is survived by Ann McIntosh Hoffelder, his wife of 60 years; his son Erich, his wife Susie and their daughter Danielle of Altamonte Springs, FL; his daughter Marty, her husband Rob, and their children Emma, Mack and Michael of Weston, MA.
Bob was born in St. Louis in 1932. In the 1940s his family followed the path of earlier generations to San Diego where he attended La Jolla High School. In the summer of 1950 before his senior year in high school Bob's National Guard unit was activated and he spent the next two years serving in Germany. Upon returning to the states, Bob graduated with a B.S. in Marketing from San Diego State College, then worked in the personnel department at the Navel Electronic Lab, in Point Loma, CA. He received an M.A. in Sociology and Psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a PhD in Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Maryland.

In 1964 Dr James Boswell brought the Hoffelders to Cumberland College where Bob was a professor of sociology for 30 years. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Bob served as Department Chair and was involved in many professional and community organizations until his retirement in 1995. Not yet ready to give up teaching, Bob accepted a one year assignment as an adjunct professor with the University of Maryland in the Department of Defense program at the Ramstein Air Force Base Germany.

In 1999 Bob and Ann returned to southern California where they found a vibrant community in Laguna Woods. Their last 20 years together have been filled with many new friends and activities, opportunities to write, think and teach; as well as countless evenings enjoying the sunsets. This wise, funny man known as "Dr. Bob" or "Prof" or "Hoff" or just "Bob" lived his mantra "Enjoy, look up, move on."

A service to remember and celebrate Bob's life will be held at the Community Center in Laguna Woods Village, Sunday January 26, 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Robert Hoffelder, PhD can be made to the University of the Cumberlands Scholarship or Workship fund. https://www.ucumberlands.edu/give#general-fund
